Reader's Digest files for bankruptcy protection

I remember growing up with this publication from their book-like magazines to their thick hard-cover fiction volumes as my Dad used to subscribe to them. Those were the days when teachers would recommend Reader's Digest as supplementary reading to improve your general knowledge and English language.

Of course now with the internet and whole explosion of knowledge, this little publication has dropped substantially in readership and circulation. It isnt a surprise i suppose that it has just filed for bankruptcy protection. Kinda nostalgic and sad tho!

Survey report on H1N1

According to a French survey report, these are some of the conclusions drawn from this recent H1N1 epidemic.

1. Almost 50% of people who died were pregnant or had other health conditions esp diabetes and obesity

2. Although older people seem to be less likely than others to get infected, if they do get the new H1N1 flu, they are more likely to die.

3. Approx 51 percent of deaths occurred in the age group of 20-49 year-olds. Median age of the 343 fatal cases in the study conducted was 37 years.

4. 12% of people who died were 60 or older. In contrast, more than 90 percent of deaths from seasonal influenza are in people over the age of 65.

5.The case fatality rate for H1N1 swine flu is less than 1 percent -- about 0.4 percent, the researchers said. This is a little higher than for seasonal influenza but lower than the 2 percent to 3 percent fatality rate estimated for the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic.

6.Companies making vaccines include AstraZeneca's MedImmune unit, CSL, GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Novartis AG and Sanofi-Aventis SA.

Marrying rich in China

This is what you can expect if you marry a rich guy in China...limousine wedding car and tons of gold!!! With the escalating price of gold these days, you can bet you are seriously loaded!! All those bangles are the loong-foong(dragon phoenix) bangles which are mostly solid gold and weigh quite a fair bit. Its a wonder she can still walk wearing that...but its a status symbol i guess.

Caned for drinking...

Part time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno discovered too late the penalty of being a Muslim and consuming alcohol in a hotel night club in Cherating. She was clearly also plain unlucky that the state religious department chose to raid the place at 1.20am on July 12, 2007.

The Syariah High Court court fined her RM5000 and sentenced to 6strokes of the rotan. However she can be comforted by the fact that in Islamic law, the cane should not be thicker than the little finger on the hand and that the cane cannot be lifted so high that the upper arm is lifted away from the armpit. So depending on whose little finger the cane is measured against, the caning shouldnt be too harsh. Come to think of it, I think my mum use to raise her hand higher when caning us kids!!

KL's public works of art

While driving in KL, take a closer look at the walls on sides of buildings and you will notice, KL has some budding artists. Walls that would look monotonous otherwise have been turned into colourful "works of art"! I have always wondered who is/are the ones doing all these art! Anyone knows??

Have you seen the Perseid Meteor?

My bro alerted me to this natural phenomenon that occurs every August. Accordingly , the meteor shower would be at its best between 1.30am and 4am with 100 Perseids streaking across the sky per hour. Malaysians who missed catching the peak of the Perseid meteor shower in the early hours this morning can catch the shower again after midnight tomorrow and thereafter till around August 17.

The Milky Way is seen during the Perseid shower above the Los Padres National Forest in Frazier Park, California, August 12, 2009. The Perseid meteor shower is sparked every August when the Earth passes through a stream of space debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. Perseid meteors are bright, and often leave luminous trails of gas. It is named Perseid as its point of origin is from the constellation Perseus.

Pics taken from Yahoo.news as my bro didnt manage to see it this morning. LOL

Exploding Ipod??!

For those of you who are using the ipod or have children using it, please beware cos your ipod may just explode as this girl found out. Read the article below from OS News and the brouha that ensued.....

I think we just found out why we aren't hearing more stories of exploding and burning iPods. Ken Stanborough had to throw his daughter Ellie's iPod Touch outside, because it got too hot to hold, and he could see vapour. Within 30 seconds, he could see smoke, he heard a pop, and the Touch went 10ft into the air. After contacting Apple, the company denied liability, but offered a refund. However, Apple said that in accepting the money, Stanborough was not allowed to talk about the existence of the agreement - or else Apple would sue him. Update: Apple told Sky News Online that the letter with the gagging order is standard practice.

Stanborough contacted Apple in order to get a refund, and while the company did offer a refund in a letter, the company also stated that by accepting the money, Stanborough was to "agree that you will keep the terms and existence of this settlement agreement completely confidential", and that any breach of confidentiality "may result in Apple seeking injunctive relief, damages and legal costs against the defaulting persons or parties".

Needless to say, Stanborough was appaled. "I thought it was a very disturbing letter," he said, "They're putting a life sentence on myself, my daughter and Ellie's mum, not to say anything to anyone. If we inadvertently did say anything, no matter what, they would take litigation against us. I thought that was absolutely appalling."

"We didn't ask for compensation, we just asked for our money back," he added. Stanborough has not accepted the money, and didn't sign the letter. An Apple spokesperson said that since Apple had not seen the iPod in question, they could not comment. The Trading Standards Institute could not comment on whether letters like this are standard in the industry, but that they could understand Apple wanting to take steps to protect its reputation.

Threatening your customers (and victims of your faulty product, no less) with litigation. Sounds like a good business strategy to me!

Kuala Selangor Family Dinner

It takes around an hour to get to Kuala Selangor from 1U area. My nephew guided all of us as he had been there before with his friends. There are many restaurants here but we chose this one as my nephew had tried it before.
If you come earlier in the day around noon, you could actually buy some fresh catches of the day from the fishermen.
However since we arrived only in the evening, these were some of the leftovers from the day's catch.
I didnt buy any nor inquired about the price as our sole intention of going to KS was to catch the sunset and enjoy some seafood. However i expect the seafood would be cheaper than KL prices anytime.
We had quite an array of dishes from crabs, fish, oyster omelette, steamed lala/shells,prawns, calamari etc. Though the seafood was fresh, preparation was just average. Nonetheless we all enjoyed our little trip and will be planning for the next one.
