Interesting historical facts.

Interesting facts from the 1500s:-

1. Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married..

2. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water..

3. Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying It's raining cats and dogs.

4. There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

5. The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing.. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance way. Hence the saying a thresh hold.

(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)

6. In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old..

7. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special.. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat..

8. Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

9. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

10. Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days . Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

11. England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people.. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell.. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer.
And that's the truth...Now, whoever said History was boring !

Restoran Hou Fook Noodle House

This noodle house is located at M2-A-10, Jalan Pandan Indah 4/6- see the shop with the brownish signboard. Finding a place to park maybe a problem on weekdays as this is a busy office/shops area.
Interior of place is typical Chinese noodle house style-lol. Wooden tables and stools. Pics of the food are displayed on the wall.
This is their homemade noodles supposedly without preservatives.
Ayam kampung or steamed village chicken is also the other speciality and you will find there is hardly any fat on the meat.
Springy fishballs comes with the noodles. All in all, the food was quite tasty tho it left me abit thirsty so maybe MSG was added a tat too much!

A Little Dim Sum Place

Was not satisfied after the nyonya food and since we have driven so far to SS2 from KL, went in search for sweet desserts and found this little dim sum place near the SS2 central open food court along Jalan SS2/63.
This place is famous for their dim sum served in a cosy setting. However we were there just for the dessert. This is the hasma with red dates and wasnt too sweet. So good for me.
Waitress recommended the seasonal durian puff. There is one layer of actual durian "meat" in there so was kinda nice.

Barley with gingko nuts is the other dessert ordered. All in all quite a good place to chill out and have some sweet and light stuff. Service was with a smile. Aircon wasnt that cold tho as the doors were left open. Would probably go again to try the dim sum if am in that area again.

Restoran Bibichik

A late nite search for a nyonya restaurant led to this one at 17 Jalan SS2/30, PJ which is located at the row behind the more famous Nyonya Restaurant. As it was late and we were hungry, we asked for food that was quick to prepare. Sambal prawn petai was recommended. This restaurant was featured in the Ho Chak series on TV8 and supposedly the dishes are not very spicy. I can attest to that on this dish.
Deep fried brinjal is one of the specialities in this place though i found it unique, i didnt quite like it. Was abit sweet and oily.
This is their version of chicken ponteh and didnt come with much potatoes but with some rather hard yam which made the yam un-eatable. This dish was also abit of a sweet and darker soya sauce version of a ponteh and therefore not to my taste unfortunately.

The food here is not that expensive costing around RM8-15 each dish but i didnt quite like it, what i had anyway. Service was also negative as there is either a communication problem or the staff were abit rude. Personally I would go back to Nyonya Restaurant if i wanted nyonya again in future.

Some politicians do make sense...

I kinda like Kuli's reply to Zaid's invitation to join PKR. Read on and see if you agree...

He said: "......I am not in Umno because I “harbour hope of saving Umno” in its present incarnation. I remain because the cause for which Umno was formed, and the principles which guided its promotion, has not gone away just because we have lost our way 60 years later, and they need to be upheld.

"A second reason I shall not be accepting Zaid’s kind offer is that things have deteriorated to the point that party affiliation is really not the issue anymore. The issue is how we are to save our country.
What we must do now goes beyond political parties. We need the rakyat to rise up to claim their institutions, and demand that our public institutions are answerable to them. We must wake up to our sovereignty as citizens, reclaim the constitution which constitutes us as a nation and guarantees our rights, and demand a comprehensively reformed government to restore public confidence. We must do this before it is too late".

The Injustice of it all...

Prime Minister Najib Razak has finally announced the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to assuage the nation’s anger over the tragic death of Teoh Beng Hock in the hands of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). But what a let down, and what a deception!

Instead of probing the death of Teoh, the Commission is asked to look into the interrogation methods of the MACC. The absurdity of this move is akin to a school boy caned to death in a school, and the public inquiry is over the disciplinary procedure of the school, not over how and why the boy met his death.

The injustice that befell Teoh Beng Hock – a clear victim of political persecution – has infuriated the nation to boiling point, and yet Najib thinks that an RCI looking into MACC’s methodology would be sufficient to douse the anger and restore confidence in his leadership. What does he take Malaysians for? A bunch of dimwits?

(excerpt from Malaysiatoday.net today)

When i read the above, it brought back to mind something that happened recently in Syd's former high school...a so called smart school. A few students who had skipped school were called up to the discipline teacher's room. Subsequently one of the boys was singled out to stay back whereas the others were told to leave. What happened in that room left the boy with multiple bruises from punching and head slamming onto the table/wall by the teacher. The boy ran down to the school's office to make a call to his parents. The Pengetua was not around and the Penolong Pengetua(PP) told him not to phone. Nevertheless he managed to make the call and before the parents could come, the discipline teacher came down and started head slamming the boy onto the Penolong Pengetua's table. This was witnessed by the PP as well as some other office staff who subsequently pulled the teacher away.

When the parents came, the PP said it was a misunderstanding!? The parents made a police report and the police came to the school. Subsequently the next day, one police officer came during the school assembly and told the students something like this, "if you say something happened but there are no witnesses, then it means nothing happened! So dont spread rumours and stop blogging about it!" The student is suspended for a week and the teacher is still there disciplining!!?

So do you see the likeness in the above scenario and this particular school incident ? I thank God my kids are not in public school anymore....is all i can say. When it comes to other incidents, just remember, if there are no witnesses, it doesnt mean it happened!!

Importance of Prayer?

Got this funny email and thought should share it...

By the way, I have a friend who ensures that his kids say their prayers every night before they go to bed and one night be peeped into the kids’ room and overheard his seven-year old son utter this prayer:

Oh, and by the way God, I also wish our Wakil Rakyat would be struck down by a sickness or knocked down by a car. I know, Lord, it is not very nice to wish for someone’s death but I have been told that it is okay to sacrifice one’s life if it is for the sake of the entire community. I mean, Lord, that is what soldiers do everyday. They die so that the rest of the people can have a good life.

If our Wakil Rakyat were to die then there would be a by-election in our constituency. That would mean the government would spend hundreds of millions to upgrade the roads in our neighbourhood. Yesterday, I hit a huge hole in the road and fell down. I not only hurt my knee and elbow but my bicycle is now destroyed.

I heard my dad say that the residents have been complaining for more than a year but the government still did nothing about the bad roads while our neighbour said that unless there is a by-election then don’t hope for anything to be done. So, if our Wakil Rakyat were to die, then there would be a by-election called and our roads would immediately be upgraded.

My dad said he is not prepared to buy me a new bicycle because the economy is very bad and he does not have the money to spend on such things. But if there is a by-election then the government will give out free bicycle to all the kids and I will then get the new bicycle that my dad can’t afford to buy.

Furthermore, my dad’s car has been stuck in the garage for the last three months because the road tax has expired and he can’t afford to renew it. So we now have to take a bus to go to town. If there is a by-election then the government will hand out RM1,000 ang pows and with this money my dad will be able to renew his road tax.

Thank you, God, and I hope my wish is not too personal. I will talk to you tomorrow night, Lord, but in the meantime maybe you can see what you can do about the Wakil Rakyat thing that I wished for.

Ice has more bacteria than toilet water!??

Yes Ice has more bacteria than toilet water 70% of the time!!

12-year-old Jasmine Roberts, a smart 7th grade student in Tampa, Florida hit upon a startling discovery as part of her winning science fair project. She compared the ice used in sodas and other drinks with the water from the toilet bowls in the same fast food restaurants. She was shocked by the results.

The ice served in soft drinks and other beverages at fast food restaurants had more bacteria than water from the same restaurant’s toilet! Not only that, but 70percent of the time, the ice had more bacteria than the toilet water.

Jasmine had the water tested at a lab at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, where she volunteers with a USF professor. Ice in three of the five restaurants tested positive for fecal coliform or E. coli, organisms that come from the feces of warmblooded animals!

As the Tampa newspaper pointed out, symptoms, “related to the presence of coliform include cramps and diarrhea. E. coli can cause intestinal illness and, in rare cases, hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious kidney condition.”
“I thought there might be a little bacteria in the ice, but I never expected it to be this much,” Jasmine told the Tampa Bay News, “ And I never thought the toilet water would be cleaner.” Therefore as a safe option lets drink boiled or warm water for safe health

Man U Fever in KL

I wonder if Syd will give 'me' for a photo with Michael Carrick??!!LOL

Update: Syd finally managed to watch her Carrick in action last nite ....like they say "One man's loss is another's gain"! In this case due to the hotel bombings in Jakarta, MU cancelled goin there so ended up staying on in KL for another match last nite at 8.30pm. So Syd got a free ticket courtesy of her college mate and best of all, Carrick played. He didnt play on Saturday! LOL...

Its all sad today

It seems like quite a bleak day in Malaysian news today when the top stories are the death of a Selangor political secretary and a 5year old boy. The former supposedly took his own life after being questioned by MACC and the latter was 'beheaded' by his family's longstanding enemy in Lahad Datu, KK.

Both deaths seem to be without logic and totally unnecessary. Sigh...What can be so terrible that you would take your own life especially when you are supposed to be married the next day? Hopefully in the days ahead, we will know what happened during the all-night questioning he went thru with MACC and hours before his "suicidal jump" from MACC building.Read Zorro's blog for more curious questions regarding the 'bloodless plunge'?

Meanwhile the other death is so primitive and looks like Kota Kinabalu has gone back to 100 years ago!? In this case, the family's longstanding feud with another caused their enemy to chop off the son's head and left the head in a bucket. This probably happened when the boy was alone. What kind of feud is so terrible that you would take an innocent boy's life so primitively?? So i suppose this feud would go on into the next generation? The suspect is only 27years old and the murder supposedly took place with his wife and daughter around! Since then they have gone missing.

Hmm...all in all quite a bleak day in Malaysia today...what do you say?

Masterchef Australia

I have been clicking on this cooking contest show's website from Australia and reading on the recipes prepared. One of the contestants is Poh Ling Yeow(far left of pix) whose family migrated from Malaysia to Adelaide since she was 9years old which was like 27years back. She is an artist by profession but now trying to reclaim her Malaysian roots and culture thru cooking. Looks like she is doing great cos she just won the pie challenge as well as the Malaysian dish challenge. And best of all, i think she is a Hakka...lol. Cos her biography states her fav dish to cook is abacus beads(sun-pun-zhi...hakka dish!!).

This was the Malaysian dish she created - Nasi Lemak with sambal petai and fish custard(or here we call otak2). Her otak2 was more innovative and i suppose more to cater to Aussie taste. I wish this show was aired here so that we can cheer on Poh and hope she goes on to win the contest! Malaysia boleh!!

Gold Scam???

I was introduced to this gold investment scheme sometime earlier this year and it sounded like any "get rich quick" scheme. The gist of the investment is you buy gold bars at a certain rate(at least 30% higher than international gold price ). You hold on to this gold for at least 30days and from the 31st till 38th day(if not mistaken) you can redeem back your investment plus 2.5% interest.

Eg. You invest RM100K, you bring the gold bar back after 30days, you will get back RM102,500in total. Not too sure about the actual terms but in a nutshell this is the scheme. 2.5% per month return!! Sounds fantastic right? As with anything that sounds too good to be true, i declined from investing and selling this scheme. I did check with Bank Negara on this company and they mentioned that a company selling gold doesnt need a license to operate but you invest at your own risk.

Basically its like a goldsmith shop but of course in this case they guarantee you the 2.5% return! Anyway it was reported in "The Star" yesterday as one of the dubious get rich scheme companies in Malaysia. This morning , i got this email from my friend attaching this letter from Genneva to The Star. The letter doesnt sound convincing and looks like they are hiding some facts. But anyhow, you be the judge. As with any "guaranteed with ridiculously high returns" investment, the risk involved would also be super ridiculously HIGH as well!

One Step Forward...

One step forward for mankind, but 10 steps backwards for Malaysia. Yeah the cabinet after much brouha..decided to convert back to teaching Math and Science in BM by 2012. sighs... I suppose this is for 1Malaysia??! Those of you with younger kids...my thoughts and emphathy are with you. But we are Malaysians la...no problem right? Memphis Bistro

Memphis Bistro is located at Pusat Perdagangan Dana1 which is along the side of the highway leading to the old Subang Airport. Its opened by a former Genting chef and specialises in Western fushion cuisine.

The interior of the restaurant with plain furniture with Country Western posters and features Country western music.

This is their version of Fisherman's Chowder. Notice it is orangey in colour...could be the addition of cumin or something equally exotic as it has a spicy tangy taste to it.

Ceasar's Salad of Crisp Romaine lettuce in a delicious dressing with croutons and crisp cheese shavings. Very nice without any addition of meat.

Grilled Salmon with spinach and potatoes. Nothing much to shout about.

Fried sphagetti Thai style with tiger prawns. Presentation was abit messy and portion was quite big. The prawns were not entirely fresh either. They could no better with smaller portions and a more reliable prawn supplier. Otherwise the taste was okay.

Hot Chocolate Lava Cake with ice cream.

Hot chocolate filling ala lava!! Hmm...many other places serve better versions tho.

Though my meal here was not particularly satisfying and service was abit slow(only one waiter!), have heard that other dishes such as their steaks and baked cheese lobster are pretty good. May try those if am in this area again.

Hanazen Chef's Recommendation

Had a nice and satisfying meal at Hanazen in Jaya One recently and if you trust the chef(with your $) , then let him serve you the day's specialities at his whim. lol. This was the apetizer...Japanese tomato served on a bed of ice. The Jap tomato is really sweet and tastes abit apple-rish too. Costs RM18 each! I love tomatoes from young so if any of you goin to Japan, pls buy back some for me as a souvenier. Thanks!
Sashimi consisting of 6 types of fish and included my fav of tuna belly or toro.Very fresh as it was a Friday and most Japanese restaurants get their fresh stock every Tuesday and Friday mornings. If you want them fresh then go on those days is always a safe bet.
Teppanyaki Jap green bell peppers. Crunchy and nice.
I forgot what this fish is already but its grilled and sprinkled with some salt.
This is Kobe steak with a slice of liver pate on top. Comes with beef lard and fried garlic. According to the chef, all these go well together. Its kinda oily and fatty but i really love this dish. The pate was "to die for". Melted in my mouth. Am still dreaming about it...lol.

Lastly this soup with scallop and vege is very clear and it supposed to clean your palate after a heavy meal.

Dessert of Japanese pomelo ice cream finished off a very delicious and just filling meal. Compliments to the chef for a well-thought of menu. Damage? Around RM380(2pax).

World's Most Unique Colour Beaches

Unless you're lucky enough to have visited some of the unique shorelines below you'll probably be used to seeing - at best - golden beaches on your travels. In fact a lot of people believe golden sands to be the only option when it comes to beaches. As these following pics show, there are more colours to beaches than that.

Punalu'u Beach

Punalu'u Beach is the most visited of the few black sand beaches on Hawaii 's Big Island and the stunningly black sand is actually volcanic rock, deposited as lava and subsequently cooled when met by the ocean. Apparently to take any of the sand home would result in you being cursed by a volcano goddess by the name of Pele.

Papakolea Beach
One of only 2 green sand beaches in the world, the truly magnificent sight of Papakolea Beach can be experienced by travelling to Hawaii 's Ka'u district. Again, the unique colour of its sand can be attributed to volcanic activity - specifically, the green hue belongs to the abundance of olivine crystals which have been produced as a result of a nearby cinder cone erupting and eroding.

Hyams Beach

You may need to wear your shades when visiting Hyams Beach in New South Wales , Australia , but not just due to the sun. It's not surprising after looking at photos but this sublime stretch of beach is home to the whitest sand in the world, an honour awarded by the Guinness Book of Records.

Pfeiffer Beach
The hills surrounding Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur , California , are rich in Manganese Garnet. A result of this being washed down onto the beach is the colour scheme you can see above - the entire stretch of sand has become a shifting, pink and purple canvas. Although it's probably inedible, I can't help picturing a bowl of Raspberry Ripple ice-cream every time I see it.

Kaihalulu Beach

You won't find many beaches elsewhere in the world with sand as red as this one. Kaihalulu, or Red Sand Beach , is situated on the island of Maui and can thank the neighbouring cindercone hill for its intensely deep red appearance.

Dont you think these beaches are unique? Hope to one day see them with my own eyes....

French Manicure

Syd's attempt at French Manicure on her feet...lol. Dont you think she has cute toes?!
